Beehive found in Medicine Hat gets a new home

Nov 21, 2025 | 8:31 AM

A Medicine Hat resident recently discovered a hive of non-native honey bees in a natural park space near the I-XL brick plant.

With colder weather arriving, a social media post from the City of Medicine Hat highlighted the importance of relocating the hive safely, both to save the non-native bees and to allow native pollinators to thrive in their natural environment.

On the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 19, Stella Sehn and Sheldon Hill from Sweet Pure Honey safely located the queen and removed the hive from the natural area with the help of Dustin Helle at Poplar Mechanics Tree Service Ltd., the post said.

The bees were then safely relocated to the apiary at Neubauer Farms, where they will join the Prairie Rose Public Schools’ Prairie Rose Honey program hives.

The City of Medicine Hat added that they are pleased to know these bees will support the agricultural education students of southeastern Alberta, while allowing native pollinators in the community to thrive.
