Students team up at Medicine Hat College for Cows, Crops, & Calculators

Nov 5, 2025 | 7:50 AM

Grade 11 and 12 students from Prairie Rose Public School teamed up with Business Administration students at Medicine Hat College on Tuesday for a case competition.

Cows, Crops, & Calculators is an accounting and agriculture-focused competition in which college students mentor high school students and work together to solve a business scenario.

“Students will build confidence, teamwork, professionalism and critical thinking in a safe environment that mirrors real-world scenarios, where decisions must be made quickly,” Heather Stahl, academic chair for MHC’s School of Business & Continuing Studies, said in a statement before the competition.

“The decisions are backed by evidence and communicated to the client. It’s a great way to connect theory with practice.”

The learning opportunity was made possible by the CPA Education Foundation and helped expose each student to accounting-specific skills, such as compiling financial information and evaluating decisions using both financial and non-financial information.

The experiential practice also looked to strengthen essential business and interpersonal skills, including strategic thinking, presentation design, communication, teamwork, leadership and time management.

“Watching students engage with real-world problems reminds us why experiential learning is so powerful,” Stahl said.

“It brings theory to life by showing students how their learning translates into real-world impact and inspires them to become the business leaders of tomorrow.”

Teams had a limited time to create a case and present to judges in both the accounting and agricultural industries.

The competition included $6,000 worth of cash prizes.

A pair of open houses are coming up now for Medicine Hat College.

The events will take place at the college’s Brooks campus on Nov. 5 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and at the Medicine Hat campus on Nov. 12 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
