Pair of Medicine Hat area hockey players competing in Western All-Star Challenge

A pair of players from the Medicine Hat area are competing against each other in the Western All-Star Hockey Challenge in Martensville, Sask.

Defenseman Wyatt Dreger is playing for the Manitoba Junior Hockey League team, and Forward Cash Olson is on the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team.

Olson scored for the SJHL team as they won 3-2 on Tuesday night in Game 1.

The teams played a second game on Wednesday morning with the MJHL team winning 5-4.

In that contest, Olson started the scoring for the SJHL team and Dreger picked up an assist.

The games are serving as a pre-selection camp for Team Canada West for the 2025 World Junior A Challenge in Trois-Rivières, Que., from Dec. 7-13.

Forty of the top players aged 19 and under from both leagues are competing in the challenge.

Olson, 18, is playing the 2025-26 season with the SJHL’s Estevan Bruins and has 16 points through 16 games, with five goals and 11 assists.

He sits tied for first in the rookie scoring race in the SJHL while playing on the Bruins’ first line.

Olson is an alumnus of the South Alberta Hockey Academy, Medicine Hat Minor Hockey, and Redcliff Minor Hockey programs.

Dreger, 18, is in his second season with the Portage Terriers in the MJHL.

During the 2025-26 season, he has 11 points in 16 games, with four goals and seven assists.

He is an alumnus of the Prairie Hockey Academy, Medicine Hat Minor Hockey, and Redcliff Minor Hockey programs.
