Medicine Hat Police Service officer charged

Oct 22, 2025 | 1:26 PM

Criminal charges have been laid against a Medicine Hat Police Service officer following a use-of-force event which occurred on Jan. 26, 2025.

MHPS said that while no public complaint was received, the Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services was notified of the event pursuant to section 46.1 of the Alberta Police Act and a use-of-force review was initiated by MHPS, which led to a criminal investigation.

The Alberta Crown Prosecutors’ office reviewed the investigation and, on Oct. 22, 2025, Cst. Chan Lee was charged with two counts of assault with a weapon.

Cst. Lee was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 25, 2025.

Since the investigation began, Cst Lee has been assigned to administrative duties and will remain in that role pending the outcome of the criminal matter.

The Office of the Chief will review his duty status upon the conclusion of this process, ensuring that all decisions are made fairly and in accordance with the law.

The MHPS said it is committed to maintaining the highest standards of accountability and transparency. Adding that they initiated a thorough review of this incident, in the absence of a public complaint, to ensure that their actions align with community and legal standards. Ensuring the safety and maintaining the trust of the community continues to be a top priority for the Service.

As the matter is before the courts, MHPS said no further information will be provided at this time.
