City of Medicine Hat says to expect a few changes at the polls Monday

Oct 16, 2025 | 2:18 PM

The City of Medicine Hat said in a press release that voters can expect a few changes when they head to the polls on Monday.

From a new digital list of electors that updates in real-time across all polling locations, to a shift back to hand-counted ballots, and the return of the Election Sign Recycling Program, this year’s municipal election will look a little different than years past, according to the City.

Polling locations

Electors can choose to cast their vote at any one of ten polling locations throughout the city on Election Day.

Voting stations are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

A new digital list of electors will update in real-time across all polling locations to maintain accurate records of who has voted.

More information about voting is available at medicinehat.ca/voterinfo

Hand-counting ballots

Recent updates to the Local Authorities Elections Act ban the use of electronic tabulators.

For the first time in decades, the ballots from Medicine Hat’s Municipal Election will be counted by hand.

The Kangaroo Board method will be used as an efficient way to streamline the hand-counting process.

A demonstration of this counting method can be found on the City’s YouTube channel.

Election results reporting

Ballot counting will begin after the polls close at 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20.

Preliminary unofficial results for the 2025 Municipal Election will begin appearing on the City’s website as soon as counts are reported and updated hourly until 2 a.m. on election night.

If ballot counting continues past that time, updates will resume at least once per hour during regular business hours until counting is complete.

Election results are considered official at noon, four day after Election Day.

Election sign recycling

Campaign signs can be recycled free of charge at the Kipling Bulk Recycling Depot at 240 Kipling Street SE.

A designated bin will be on site from Oct. 21 until Oct. 30, 2025.

The city said acceptable materials include signs made of corrugated plastic, plastic film, or paperboard.

Wooden stakes and wire mounts must be removed and discarded into the grey garbage carts before the signs are placed in the bin.

Large signs may need to be cut into smaller pieces.
