Medicine Hat councillor candidate Steven Pudwell wants to see city stop stalling business

Oct 7, 2025 | 8:28 AM

Councillor candidate Steven Pudwell has a long history working in the business community in Medicine Hat and wants to see the city stop stalling business.

“I think that we have to get on board and make it easier to do business in Medicine Hat. Simplifying regulations, looking at things like off-site levies, and infill projects,” Pudwell said.

“When an investor does come to Medicine Hat, what does that look like? Instead of just going there and saying, here’s all my Medicine Hat land and property. There are entrepreneurs and businesses in Medicine Hat, and developers we can be showing their land or their project at the same time to the investor,” he added.

“Now we go from concept to commitment way quicker because we have everything in front of that investor and we’re moving forward.”

Pudwell said looking at trying to make things fair and affordable in Medicine Hat is also important to him.

“There are some people that are struggling, and we have to make sure that we’re looking out for them and then giving them some lifts,” Pudwell said.

The 56-year-old was born and raised in Medicine Hat.

“I’m one of those true-blue hatters kind of idea. I have grown up in this community. I have been working in this community and in business for over 30 years,” Pudwell said.

“I have volunteered with many organizations. I’ve also gone and done some things with the Kinsmen Club and the Chamber of Commerce, and I’ve taken on some leadership roles with them,” he added.

“I truly believe in this community. I’ve seen, I’ve lived it, I’ve been here and now I want to do the next step and let’s get Medicine Hat back.”

Pudwell said he thinks that Medicine Hat is pretty resilient, and we have to make it even more.

He sees lots of positives with the city’s location in southeast Alberta.

“We’re on the Trans-Canada Highway. We have Highway 3. We have a big agricultural foothold in this area. We have businesses. We have entrepreneurs. We have good people who will roll up their sleeves to help each other,” Pudwell said.

“We have the college where we can work with the college, and business to train some of their employees, so everything is here,” he added.

“We just have to blend it all together so that it is going to actually do something.”

Medicine Hat’s electric generation is something he thinks is a great asset for the city.

“It just makes sense. We can set our rates for residential, we can set the rates for industry that comes and then we can also make it fair and equitable so that even though you’re a new business, those existing businesses that we have, we all can benefit from that,” Pudwell said.

This is the first time Pudwell has put his name forward for a position on council.

“There are quite a few candidates right now, and there are lots of good people to choose from. I want people to take a look at me and give me a chance, because I know that I will do my best to serve them,” Pudwell said.

“Going forward, we need to have leadership. Get some people working together and rowing in the same direction,” he added.

“I believe the future of Medicine Hat is looking bright because of this election coming up. There are some good things to happen.”

Pudwell said he believes his life experiences will help him get into City Hall, understand it quicker, and get to work on solving problems instead of just talking about problems.

“I have lots of experience on boards, in governance. I’ve run projects where I’ve had to go and do the planning with team members, with myself and then implement it,” Pudwell said.

“Then as the plan rolls out, you monitor it and then of course you make some tweaks along the way,” he added.

“My whole life has been that problem solver, and I’ve helped businesses and organizations across Medicine Hat grow.”
