Medicine Hat councillor candidate Cowan says he will devote one hundred percent of his effort to city council

Oct 7, 2025 | 5:37 PM

Gord Cowan is running for city council in Medicine Hat with a combined 24 years on various local, municipal, provincial, and federal boards.

Cowan is retired and will commit to the council full-time if elected.

“I wanted to make sure that I had a hundred percent of my effort and time to spend towards the city council.”

The primary topic Cowan is focusing on in his campaign is bringing affordability to the city.

“What really drove me [to run] is just knowing a lot of young families and seeing the struggles that they have,” Cowan said.

“I want to try and look at various ways that we can lower the cost of living in Medicine Hat.”

“Whether that be through priority spending or using the reserves that the city has on deposit right now to help people during this time of extreme affordability crisis,” he added.

Another topic Cowan wants to bring to the council is stable communication.

“The good Lord gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason. We have to be able to listen to our colleagues and speak when you have something to say,” Cowan said.

Cowan said the council has missed out on many opportunities to attract industry to Medicine Hat.

“One of the ways to help out with residential taxes is to have a strong industrial base, and along with that comes employment,” Cowan said.

“But the most important thing for any community is our young people. We really have to focus on our young people and make sure that they have opportunities to thrive in Medicine Hat.”

Cowan was born and raised in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, where he started working as an insurance broker and business owner. Cowan has lived in Medicine Hat since 1991.

This is the first time Cowan is running for council in Medicine Hat.
