The Mustard Seed has withdrawn the application to rezone a property in Medicine Hat’s northwest to become a shelter location.

On Aug. 28, 2025 the City announced that after evaluating several properties, The Mustard Seed and the City of Medicine Hat had agreed to explore 2055 Saamis Drive NW as a potential location for emergency shelter services.

Since that time, both the City and The Mustard Seed said they have received numerous inquiries and concerns related to the appropriateness of this site, both for users and for surrounding properties and businesses.

A public hearing had been scheduled for the rezoning of the property on Sept. 29, 2025 at a City Council meeting, but has been cancelled to allow both parties time to further review and respond to concerns according to a news release from the City of Medicine Hat.

The City said that during the review process, the parties, including the Province of Alberta will also take the opportunity to continue exploring other options for a permanent shelter location.

In the release the City highlighted that finding a shelter location that balances the needs and desires of all stakeholders is challenging, and they along with the other parties involved are open to input from community members on where to locate this important community service.

Community members that have a suggestion for a suitable site can visit the City’s shelter services information page and use the form to submit their thoughts.

Finding a location remains a priority according to the City, but it acknowledges that it’s important to take the time to hear from the community to ensure the best possible solution.

The City said it appreciates the Mustard Seed’s decision to withdraw the application to allow time to review and respond to concerns, and to continue working together to determine a suitable location.

With the winter months nearing, the City of Medicine Hat said it will will work closely with The Mustard Seed and Medicine Hat Community Housing Society to ensure interim plans are in place to support those in need during the cold weather months.
