Council candidate Orge focused on bringing attention to Medicine Hat if elected

Kaleb Orge is running for council in Medicine Hat and wants to bring more focus to the city.

One of his focuses is bringing light to Medicine Hat using “stunts.”

“Ever since I went to the Esplanade for the first time and started finding out about Harry Veiner. This was a guy who would challenge any other elected official to push up contests, arm wrestling, foot races,” Orge said.

“Good old fashioned stunts and stuff to get Medicine Hat’s name in the paper and to bring attention to our city.”

Orge said another priority for him is facing the housing problem in the city.

“I would spend the next five years saying yes to every single residential housing project that was safe for people to live in,” said Orge.

“Everyone’s concentrating on, you know, what businesses can we attract to town? And people need a place to live first, Medicine Hat needs to be a place with the kind of labour pool that a big company would want to move to, because we are in a splendid location.”

Orge said he wants to see clear lines of community between council and the community.

“On all issues, and at the same time, I don’t want council to bug the community with problems we’re fixing for you,” Orge said.

“Like, let’s just handle it. Let’s get it done. Let’s see what the problem is. Let’s get the information. Let’s fixit.”

The 41-year-old has lived in the Medicine Hat area since he was a child, adopted by a family in the city when he was 18 days old.

After graduating from high school, Orge attended the Medicine Hat College for three years for his certification in computers, and some pre-education course.

He then moved to Lethbridge for university classes in English literature in hopes of becoming a teacher, before moving back to Medicine Hat after a year.

Orge said he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 17 but he didn’t let that stop him from going to college and getting an education.

It wasn’t until two years ago Orge found his passion in stand up comedy at the Mad Hatter Comedy Club.

“I’ve always enjoyed writing. I performed because that’s what I had to do in order to get my material on stage,” Orge said.

“I’ve been loving it [stand up comedy]. It’s helped me really get better at public speaking.”

This is the first time Orge has run for council, and said he wants to be the person that he would want to vote for.

“That’s what I’m here for. We need people who can get the work done, and who won’t succumb to the infighting and won’t succumb to outside temptation,” said Orge.
