Amazing Race for Hunger raising money for Root Cellar Saturday

Aug 22, 2025 | 1:38 PM

The Amazing Race for Hunger, a fundraiser for the Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub is on Saturday.

This is the fourth year the event has taken place and will have 21 teams competing.

Root Cellar executive director Melissa Mullis said this is the most teams they have ever had.

“We have, I would say about 50 per cent of the teams are returning, and then we have a lot of new ones this year as well,” Mullis said.

“There’s 19 stops. It’s going through Medicine Hat and also through Dunmore.”

At these locations the competitors will do something new that hasn’t been part of the competition in previous years.

“We have a committee that works the whole year to come up with the spots. Then we’ve had a lot of help from the local businesses to come up with the activities,” Mullis said.

“The teams are out there fundraising. So they’re fundraising to buy advantages or disadvantages for the other teams,” she added.

“People can get involved by buying 50-50 tickets. That draw will happen on race day live at the awards ceremony. They can call in. So we have a call center that’s live all day where people can call in and donate.”

Mullis added people can also call in and put money towards the teams to get freezes for the other teams through the call centre at 403-528-4313 ext. 9.

The event will stream live through Facebook and YouTube with information through the Root Cellar’s page.

A watch party is also being hosted at the Silver Buckle from 11 a.m until 3 p.m.

“People can go to the Silver Buckle, eat good food, drink good drinks, and watch the races on the TVs there,” Mullis said.

“We also have people there that are selling raffle prizes, like a barbecue, and a pizza oven, and some golf tickets, and they’ll be selling 50-50 tickets there as well,” she added.

“The silver buckle is a stop, so people can also see people coming in and out.”

The financial benefit to Medicine Hat’s food bank has grown each year.

“The first year we did $35,000, the second year we did $55,000, and last year we did $96,000,” Mullis said.

“All funds go towards the emergency food pantry.”

The goal this year is to get passed the $100,000 mark.

Mullis will host the event with My96 morning host Hudson with the stream going live at 9 a.m. on Aug. 23.

A halftime show will run at 12:30 p.m. where the teams competed will each be featured.
