Legal fees, Stampede funding and south end pool among topics at Medicine Hat council meeting

Medicine Hat’s city council is set for a busy meeting Monday, with almost $16 million in financial support for the Stampede grandstand to be discussed.

City staff is recommending that council support the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede with a financial contribution of half of the total project cost, to a maximum of $15,896,250 funded through operating reserves with conditions attached.

One being that the Alberta Government provide a guaranteed financial contribution of 40 per cent toward the project, and that the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede secure the remaining 10 per cent of the total cost through internal funding, regional municipal partnerships, and/or private donations.

With an outdoor pool on the south side of the city also on the agenda.

City staff is recommending council to direct administration to initiate public engagement for the development of an outdoor aquatic facility on the south side of the city, and the construction of sports fields in Brier Run.

Drawings shown in the agenda have the potential aquatic facility located on the south end of a potential recreation centre in the Southlands area of the city, with road access from 13th Avenue.

Mayor Linnsie Clark’s legal fee reimbursement ask returns to council for the sixth time.

Clark is seeking repayment for over $76,017.62 spent to acquire a third-party legal opinion in 2023, and to take council to court over restrictions placed on her last year.

City staff is recommending that council direct administration to reimburse these fees.

Council begins with a closed session at 3:45 p.m. on Monday before opening to a public meeting at 6:30 p.m.
