Increase to mayor and councillor salaries to be reviewed at City of Medicine Hat committee meeting

Aug 12, 2025 | 10:07 AM

An increase to mayor and councillor salaries will be reviewed during the City of Medicine Hat‘s administrative and legislative review committee meeting Tuesday afternoon at city hall.

It’s one of a few items that would then be recommended by administration to move forward to the Sept. 2 council meeting agenda.

The annual base salary currently paid to the mayor is $136,639 and $45,476 for each council member.

According to the city, this salary is set to be adjusted on Jan. 1 of each year in accordance with the average monthly change to the Alberta consumer price index in the previous 12 month period from November to October.

Councillors are free to not have their annual base salary fully or partly adjusted by providing written notice to the city manager.

If approved, the annual base salary would be $159,176 for the mayor and $60,236 for councillors on Nov. 3, 2025.

This document from Tuesday’s agenda can be reviewed online, along with the full agenda.

Another item that is being reviewed for the first council meeting in September is amendments to Policy 0146, legal representation and indemnification of council members and employees.

The document background shows the purpose of the policy is to protect employees, council appointees and council members of the City of Medicine Hat from expenses of lawsuits and other actions that arise out of conduct undertaken in good faith in the performance or intended performance of their duties with the city.

The meeting will be held in Ted Grimm conference room at city hall beginning at 4 p.m., with the public available to join online through Teams.
