Two arrests related to Medicine Hat Police standoff on Sunday

Medicine Hat Police Service have released further details regarding a standoff at a residence near Kingsway Ave SE in Medicine Hat on Sunday afternoon.

Initially the RCMP had began an investigation related to a break and enter at a rural property in Cypress County on Friday where several firearms were stolen.

Relating to this Medicine Hat Police Service arrested a 28-year-old woman in Medicine Hat for possession of stolen property on Sunday.

At that time a 31-year old man who was with her fled from police.

The man was located Sunday afternoon by officers inside a residence in the 800 block of 9th Street Southeast.

He refused to leave, prompting a standoff involving the MHPS tactical team and crisis negotiators.

The man was eventually taken into custody without incident.

A search of the residence by the MHPS major crime unit led to the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and other stolen property.

The 31-year old Medicine Hat man has been charged with multiple firearms and property related offences and remains in custody pending a bail hearing.

The list of charges include:

  • Theft over $5,000
  • Possesion of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Seven counts of possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order
  • Careless storage of a firearm
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public
  • Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Uttering threats
  • Taking a motor vehicle without consent
  • Flight from a peace officer

The man underwent a bail hearing and was remanded into custody.

He is scheduled to appear in court in Medicine Hat on Aug. 13.
