Host Medicine Hat Moose Monarchs face elimination Thursday at American Legion “AA” State Tournament

The Medicine Hat Moose Monarchs will need a win Thursday afternoon to keeping playing at the American Legion “AA” State Montana/Alberta Tournament they are hosting at Athletic Park.

The eighth-seed Moose Monarchs will take on the fifth-seed Bozeman Bucks at 1 p.m.

Any team that loses twice at the tournament is eliminated.

On the opening day Wednesday the eighth-seed Moose Monarchs dropped a 7-2 decision to the top seeded Helena Senators.

The Senators jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning before the Moose Monarchs tied things up 1-1 in the top of the 3rd.

A short lived tie ended, when the Senators went up 2-1 in the bottom of the 3rd inning.

In the bottom of the 5th inning the Senators scored three, followed by another 2 in the 6th.

Down 7-1 in the 7th inning, the Moose Monarchs were able to generate one run, but ultimately fell to the Senators.

The stat lines in the game were fairly closes, as the Moose Monarchs had seven hits to the Senators eight, but the Moose Monarchs also had a pair of errors, and left six runners on base to the Senators three.

Pitcher Kaleb Bozek was on the mound for the Moose Monarchs and takes the loss, while Ryler Staarup came on in relief part way through the 6th inning.

On the mound for the Senators was Tyler Beaver, who got the win.

The Medicine Hat Moose Monarchs and seven teams from Montana are competing in the double knockout format tournament.

All of Wednesdays contests didn’t see any upsets, as the higher seeded teams came through in each game.

The third-seed Billings Scarlets beat the sixth-seed Kalispell Lakers 2-1.

The fourth-seed Billings Royals won over the fifth-seed Bozeman Bucks 14-4.

While the second-seed Missoula Mavericks shutout the seventh-seed Great Falls Chargers 2-0.

Mavericks pitchers Schuyler Fairchild and Andrew Richardson combined for the shutout.

Games start Thursday at 10 a.m. at Athletic Park with the Kalispell Lakers taking on the Great Falls Chargers in an elimination game.

Later in the day the undefeated teams square off.

The Missoula Mavericks and Billings Scarlets take to the field at 4 p.m., while the Helena Senators battle the Billing Royals at 7 p.m.

The tournament will run until Sunday with the championship game set for 11 a.m.

A tournament win, puts the team in the North Western Regionals hosted in Billings, MT.

Winning regionals gives a team a spot in the 98th American Legion Baseball World Series in Shelby, N.C. during the second week of August.
