Emergency departement at Bow Island Health Centre to remain closed until Aug. 8

Jul 31, 2025 | 11:02 AM

The Bow Island Health Centre emergency department will be closed until at least Aug. 8.

Alberta Health Services announced on July 31 that the emergency department wouldn’t open for the weekend due to lack of clinical coverage.

AHS said acute care admissions will also be paused during this time, and there is still an ongoing clinical personnel shortage and an inability to secure regular and consistent coverage during the remainder of the week.

It’s anticipated by AHS that the emergency department should resume its current hours of 7 a.m. Fridays to 7 a.m. Mondays beginning Aug. 8.

During the temporary closure, nursing staff will remain on-site to provide care for long-term care residents, AHS said.

AHS is actively recruiting for positions in the community and working to ensure local residents continue to have access to the care they need during this time, a news release said.

Patients are advised by AHS to call 911 if they have a medical emergency, with EMS services prepared to respond to emergency events and support inter-facility transfers to neighbouring sites.

Patients seeking care are able to access emergency services at the Taber Health Centre or the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

Health Link at 811, remains available 24/7 for non-emergency, health-related questions.

Individuals requiring non-emergency medical care are also encouraged by AHS to call their family physician.
