HALO Air Ambulance announced on Monday, the passing of one of their original pilots.

According to his obituary Grant Fletcher had passed away peacefully in Taber on Friday at the age of 84 years.

It is with profound sadness that the HALO team shares the passing of one of our original pilots, Grant Fletcher, a social media post from HALO read.

“Grant’s influence on the HALO program cannot be overstated. He helped shape the foundation of who we are, including our culture, our values, and our unwavering commitment to serving the people of Southern Alberta,” HALO said in a statement.

“Grant was at the controls of HALO’s very first aircraft, the Bell 206L, flying life-saving missions beginning in 2007. In 2018, he transitioned to the BK117 and continued to serve with distinction until his own retirement in 2023,” the statement added.

HALO said that over the course of his career, Grant flew countless missions.

“Dispatchers, paramedics, and first responders knew him not only for his extraordinary flying skills, but also for his deep knowledge of the land and its people,” HALO said in a statement.

“While GPS coordinates were still being calculated, Grant would ask, “Who’s place is it?” More often than not, he already knew the way. His ability to navigate rural southern Alberta was not just remarkable; it was instinctive,” the statement added.

“He carried out his duties as a helicopter pilot with unmatched professionalism, skill, and grace. As a medevac pilot, he flew with urgency, clarity, and a heart full of compassion.”

In 2024, HALO renamed their annual HALO in the Hangar event as the Grant Fletcher HALO in the Hangar, in recognition of his legacy and lasting impact on the program he helped build.

HALO said that Grant will always be remembered as more than a pilot, but as a mentor, a cornerstone of our mission, and a true cowboy of the sky.
