Cypress County councillor Richard Oster has announced that he will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming fall election.

Oster a current councillor for Cypress County’s Ward 7, has represented the county for almost 12 years.

He currently serves as the deputy reeve for the county and has been the reeve previously.

Oster said the role has been both interesting and rewarding.

“I have always looked for a balance in our spending amongst the hamlets, the acreage owners, and the farmers and ranchers,” Oster said.

“The hamlets help to look after the social infrastructure that is so vital towards good mental health while the farmers and ranchers need well maintained roads to get their product to market. This balance will not be even, but it is so important to spend the taxpayers money responsibly,” he added.

“This is probably one of a councillor’s greatest challenges, spending money wisely now, but also planning 5 to 10 years down the road.”

Oster encourages those who look to seek a nomination.

“If you like to stay curious, like meeting people, enjoy good discussions, and your personal objective is to continue making Cypress County the great place it is, this might be a job for you,” Oster said.

Oster said he extends his heartfelt thanks to the county’s ratepayers for the many memorable experiences over the years.

Oster was a recipient of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Award in 2023.
