Medicine Hat heat warning remains in place Wednesday, Bow Island sets new record temperature

A heat warning in place for a large areas of southeast Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan is expected to end Wednesday evening when temperatures begin to cool.

The Town of Bow Island broke a heat record Tuesday when they reach 32.6 C, up from the 32.5 C record set on July 8, 2005.

The initial warning was issued Monday afternoon for Medicine Hat, the warning extends to Redcliff, Bow Island, Brooks, Maple Creek, Leader, Swift Current and areas.

Environment Canada is forecasting day time high temperatures in the low to mid 30 C with overnight lows between 15 and 21 C continuing on Wednesday.

Cooler temperatures are forecast on Thursday.

Residents under the weather alert are recommended to consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day, take frequent breaks from the heat and spend time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.

They are also advised to drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.

The national weather agency alert added that people should check for children or pets before exiting their vehicle.

They should also monitor for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, such as high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness.

Pay particular attention to individuals that can experience earlier or more severe effects from heat including infants, children, seniors, and individuals with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions, outdoor workers, as well as those who are socially isolated, Environment Canada said.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
