Prairie Pride Guild has busy month of understanding in Medicine Hat

Jun 26, 2025 | 2:03 PM

The Prairie Pride Guild of Medicine Hat and District formed only a short time ago in 2024.

President Jenni Barrientos says it hard to believe it’s only been that long.

“We really appreciate the love and support from Medicine Hat and area, and want to thank everyone who works with us to make this possible,” Barrientos said.

“So far, we have been shown such kindness and appreciation from people, and we are very grateful.”

The group hosted an ask us anything event last weekend as one of a number of events they have during pride month.

Barrientos said that when they host events people may think they are only geared towards allies, or non-2SLGBTQIA+ members, but that isn’t always the case.

“It’s not “us vs. them”. We understand that times have changed, and changed fast. Language changes, the way you used to look at the world has to change as well,” Barrientos said.

“For example, the word ‘queer’, for some older folks, they grew up with that as an offensive term. But the community is reclaiming the term ‘queer’ and now it’s a positive celebration of identity,” she added.

“Even 2SLGBTQIA+ people have things to learn!”

Barrientos says they want to have places for people to learn and grow in a safe environment like when they host the ask anything events.

“We really emphasize that this is an inclusive space for genuine learning, fostering understanding and embracing growth,” Barrientos said.

“People can be afraid to ask questions: what if I say something wrong? Am I going to get cancelled? And we are here to reassure you, we want to better connect in our shared experiences,” she added.

“If you are coming from a place of kindness, we will meet you there, regardless of what you ask. We can help you with the right language.”

The City of Medicine Hat partnered with the Prairie Pride Guild to raise the Two Spirit Pride Flag in front of City Hall during Pride Month.

Barrientos said it celebrate the 35th anniversary of the coining of the term “Two Spirit.”
