Reconciliation play showing at Medicine Hat College Theatre

Jun 25, 2025 | 12:44 PM

New Blood: A Story of Reconciliation will be at the Medicine Hat College Theatre Wednesday night for a free show.

The show features poetry, music, contemporary and traditional dance, and is inspired by the life of Chief Vincent Yellow Old Woman, a residential school survivor.

The play is put on by Inter-Act Theatre and the FireKeepers Women’s Society.

Women’s Society chair Pat Aaker said it’s very important to bring this here to share their culture with the community.

“We’ve been working on it since last November and it just so happens that it’s coming to us during National Indigenous Month so it worked out really good,” Aaker said.

“One of the Firekeepers members seen this on CBC Gem and was all over it and she even got us a donation to help bring it here. She said that it is something that is worthwhile seeing,” she added.

“It’s a widely acclaimed production celebrating Blackfoot history and tradition through music and dance. The Blackfoot music and some contemporary music is by Peter Gabriel. It creates an amazing piece of theater celebrating Blackfoot history and traditions.”

The cast and crew includes 35 members from Siksika Nation, Strathmore, and Rosebud.

Already half sold out by Wednesday morning, the show starts at 7:30 p.m. and is expected to last two hours, with a talking session following.

Those under 18 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian attend with them.

Tickets are available through Eventbrite, but if there is still room Aaker said they won’t turn people that show up away.
