Rec and Ride Youth Pass offered by City of Medicine Hat

Jun 20, 2025 | 1:49 PM

A combined pass of transit and recreation is being offered to youth in the community through the City of Medicine Hat over the summer.

It’s a combined effort between the cities parks and recreation department, Medicine Hat Transit and the YMCA of Southeastern Alberta.

Youth aged 13-17 are eligible to purchase the Rec and Ride Youth Pass for the summer, valid from June 27 to Sept. 5.

Included with the $50 pass is unlimited transit use on city buses, and entry to six total City and YMCA recreation facilities in Medicine Hat.

This includes the Big Marble Go Centre, Crestwood Recreation Centre, Hill Pool, Strathcona Pool, as well as the both YMCA’s Downtown and South Ridge locations.

The passes aren’t inclusive to Medicine Hat residents only, and go on sale at the Big Marble Go Centre customer service desk on Monday.

Manager of recreation with the city Scott Richter said they are committed to creating avenues for youth to thrive and participate in recreation opportunities by reducing financial barriers.

“We prioritize active living, encouraging physical activity among residents, especially youth, to foster better overall health and well-being,” Richter said.

“These formative years are highly influential, making it essential to invest in opportunities that support their growth, connection, and overall well-being.”

Manager of transit operations with the city Gordon Dykstra said they are excited to give young riders an extra opportunity to fully enjoy the summer.

“Safely and reliably getting where they need to go, whether accessing these recreation facilities, or any other major destination in Medicine Hat,” Dykstra said.

“Taking advantage of this low-cost transit option in the summer should also help students transition naturally to school travel in the fall,” he added.

“When youth gain familiarity with transit, it allows them dependable transportation year-round.”

Cheif executive officer with the YMCA of Southeastern Alberta Sharon Hayward said they are proud to partner with the city to provide health and wellness opportunities for youth in the community this summer.

“The Rec and Ride program is a natural fit with our Y Connect Financial Assistance program that removes financial barriers to health, fitness, and aquatics activities,” Hayward said.

“Rec and Ride lets youth try multiple facilities in the city with the freedom to get to them independently, building the foundation for an ongoing healthy and active lifestyle.”
