Brooks man faces jail time and fine after fraud and tax evasion
A Brooks man has been sentenced to prison and fined nearly 800-thousand dollars for tax evasion and fraud related to COVID-19 subsidies.
The Canada Revenue Agency said Leslie Sand was handed a three-and-a-half-year sentence on Tuesday in Medicine Hat court after pleading guilty to fraud and tax evasion.
It said Sand was the sole shareholder of a 3D printing business and a drone flight operation named Flyte Deck Corporation, which his LinkedIn profile states as located in Medicine Hat, with him as the owner since May 2018.
The agency says that between April 2020 and August 2022, he fraudulently applied for subsidies even though the company never engaged in any legitimate business and never had any business income.
