Stolen ashes of Medicine Hat resident’s father returned

May 26, 2025 | 2:55 PM

Candice Price, a woman new to Medicine Hat, said her father’s ashes were among items stolen from her vehicle Sunday night.

Not long after CHAT News published a story, Price said the ashes were returned in the alleyway beside her house.

“I think whoever took them felt bad and brought them back,” she told CHAT News Monday.

Residents were asked by Price to assist in the location of the stolen ashes of her father, but doing so is no longer necessary.

Candice Prince previously asked for help in locating the ashes that she believed to have been discarded within her neighbourhood.

Prince lives on Southeast Hill, and her home is located a couple of blocks east of Safeway on Division Avenue.

Garbage will be collected Tuesday, and Prince said she hoped residents made a check to see if the ashes have been thrown away.

She also asked that residents made a quick search of their property or alleyways, in case the ashes were left on the ground.

She said they were left in the vehicle overnight because she had just returned from her father’s memorial over the weekend.

Prince said her father was the reason she moved to Medicine Hat this year.

“In the last three years, I’ve lost my entire immediate family,” she said.

“My dad was actually the last one in my immediate family left.”

Prince said, as far as his ashes went, her father didn’t specify where he wanted to be laid permanently to rest.

She said he did request, wherever it was, that she put him with her mom.

“Now, obviously, that’s going to be impossible to do without having his ashes,” she said.

“That’s really disappointing, and obviously hurts a lot.”

Prince said she was sure that if it were anyone else’s father, they’d be hopeful for a positive outcome — and be very grateful to anyone who’d be willing to help.

Now, the ashes have been returned as of Monday afternoon, but Prince said she’ll never know who took them or who made the return.

“One thing is for sure, the community’s willingness to help was very apparent,” she said.

“We are still so happy to be here in this beautiful little city.”
