Season-opening golf tourney kicks off in Medicine Hat

May 16, 2025 | 3:01 PM

Over 130 golfers are set to hit the links for the 68th annual Victoria Day Open at Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club this weekend.

The three-day long tournament is one of the first of the year for Alberta golfers and consistently draws a large turnout.

Many Alberta golfers from out of town use this event as their kickoff for the year due to uncertain conditions in areas further north in the spring.

Wayne Mattson, CPGA head professional, said the event is a favourite for golfers.

“Our golf course is in incredible golf shape for the spring,” Mattson said.

“So people from Calgary and Edmonton, they’re golf courses aren’t quite looking like ours is.”

While the field of players features over 70 golfers from out of town, several local strong talents such as Mike Volk and Ryan Werre are favourites for the men’s division.

While local golfer and former champion, Kelly Risling looks to be the favourite in the senior men’s division.

“We’ve got six golfers in the ladies major with under a six index,” said Mattson.

“So it’s going to be super competitive out there. And the field is wide open. But I think Sarah Armstrong would be the favorite.”

Tee times start at 7:30 a.m. each day and matches are expected to be wrapped by about 6 p.m.

Residents and golf enthusiasts alike are encouraged to come and spectate the show.

“They’re certainly welcome to come and watch, and follow the golfers along,” Mattson said.

“We have some incredible golfers and we’re expecting the scores to be under par for the ladies and mens and seniors divisions. Like I said, the field is super competitive, and we’re expecting some wonderful results here.”

“So it’s kinda fun to watch, if you’re a fan of golf you want to come down and watch some golf this weekend.”

Those interested in watching the tournament in-person, organizers recommend contacting the pro shop at the club to get organized in a walk along and gain access to the golf carts for those with mobility issues.
