‘Round Up for Mental Health’ donations support Medicine Hat resources during May

The Round Up for Mental Health campaign aims to support community mental health with donations garnered from Nutters Everyday Naturals in Medicine Hat.

The Canadian Mental Health Association partnered with Nutters on the second annual initiative to support mental health services in the city for the month of May.

Elizabeth Hellebrand, Nutters regional manager, said the campaign is about more than fundraising.

“It’s about raising awareness and showing people they’re not alone,” she said in a written statement.

Nutters said if donations continue at the pace they’ve been, the fundraiser is on track to surpass $40,000 — nearly doubling 2024’s total of $23,000.

“A huge thank you to everyone who has said ‘yes’ at the till already,” it said.

“Your kindness is helping make mental health support more accessible in communities across all four western provinces.”

CMHA Alberta and Centre for Suicide Prevention work with Medicine Hat Family Services to further suicide prevention in the community.

The organizations do so through activities such as suicide prevention training, and suicide prevention awareness and consultation.

The three organizations have also previously partnered to open an in-person Recovery College in Medicine Hat.

The college offers free mental health and recovery-focused courses for individuals, families, the workplace, and cultural and spiritual communities.

A peer approach is used to connect people with shared experiences to create more authentic support, with the college’s focused more on strengths and possibilities instead of problems and deficits.

Ninety-two per cent of respondents said in a 2023-24 poll that they felt more hopeful about the future after attending a recovery college.

Hilary Sirman, chief donor relations officer of CMHA Alberta, said the association is grateful to Nutters local store teams for their ongoing support of mental health and suicide prevention.

“We especially thank all Nutters’ customers for generously ’rounding up’ this month of May in support of this community mental health fundraiser,” she told CHAT News Tuesday.

The CMHA does not currently have an office location in Medicine Hat, but is partnering with Medicine Hat Family Services.

An organization representative told CHAT News CMHA Alberta and Centre for Suicide Prevention is accepting donations and providing resource support in the city.
