Medicine Hat connection for Pats first overall pick Schultz

May 7, 2025 | 9:54 PM

The Regina Pats did what was widely expected with the first overall pick of the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft on Wednesday selecting forward Maddox Schultz from the Regina Pat Canadians U18 AAA team.

The 2010 born Schultz was one of the most dominant players in Canada at the U18 level last season as an underage player.

Schultz helped lead his hometown Pat Canadians to a national championship at the Telus Cup, scoring the game winner in the final game of the tournament 28 seconds into overtime.

He learned how to skate in Medicine Hat and lived in the city with his parents prior to moving to Regina as a young child.

David and Vicki Schultz both instructed at the Cypress School of Skating in Medicine Hat approximately ten years ago.

During the 2024-25 season, Schultz had 93 points in 44 regular season games with 43 goals and 50 assists to lead the point race in the Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League.

He followed that up with a strong playoff performance putting up 22 points with nine goals and 13 assists over 10 games, again leading the SMAAAHL in points.

At the Telus Cup, Schultz also lead the tournament in points with 20 over seven games, with nine goals and 11 assists.

The two round 2025 WHL U.S. Priority Draft starts things off on Thursday at 9 a.m. The Medicine Hat Tigers have selections at picks 16 and 32.

The remainder of the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft follows this with the Tigers holding 12 picks in that draft going into the day.
