Watch for volunteers cleaning Alberta highways on Saturday, officials say

Those who are driving on Alberta’s provincial highways Saturday need to watch out for volunteers cleaning up trash, officials say.

The Alberta government is asking drivers to slow down, obey signs and watch for pedestrians while using caution as they pass cleanup crews.

That’s as the 49th annual highway cleanup features volunteers raising funds for community organizations from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Devin Dreeshan, Alberta’s transportation minister, thanked volunteers for their efforts keeping the highways clean.

“Your time and effort make a real difference and create a cleaner, safer Alberta one highway at a time,” Dreeshan said.

Volunteers from 4-H clubs, sports teams and other non-profit organizations will participate in the cleanup event, earning $100 from the Alberta government for every kilometre of highway they clean.

In 2024, the Alberta government contributed $1.2 million to 728 volunteer organizations involved in the highway cleanup, according to a news release.

Volunteers must be nine years or older to participate, take part in a safety training program and be under adult supervision.

In the event of inclement weather, the cleanup will be pushed back a week to May 10.
