Rattlers Athletics department prepares to host national golf championship in fall

Some of the top post secondary golfers in the country will be competing at Desert Blume Golf Course this October.

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association golf championship will take place from Oct. 14-17, with four rounds to crown the mens, womens and team champions.

Manager of Athletics at the college, Terry Ballard said with a practice round set for Monday, Oct. 13, the golfers will start arriving in the days before.

“It’s anywhere from 70 to 120 [golfers]. We don’t often know until almost maybe less than 30 days before because of all the conference championships that are qualifying across the country,” Ballard said.

“Whether how many females make it, how many males make it. So you have to meet a certain standard to be able to do that.”

This is the second time the event has been hosted by Medicine Hat College at Desert Blume, with the first taking place in 2018.

Rattlers Athletics will be looking for volunteers to support these athletes coming in.

Expecting to need close to 200 total.

The public will be invited to come and watch the event as well.

Ballard says this is a great way to showcase the city and Desert Blume Golf Course.

Which he says is the premier golf course in southern Alberta.

“It’s up to us to be able to create an experience for the student-athletes that they’ll remember,” Ballard said.

“They’ll remember the golf, but we want to make sure that we’re providing them with good welcome gifts, a good experience in terms of visiting the city,” he said.

“Maybe there’s a Tiger game on, they can go visit, and some other things around the community that they can get involved in. That’s up to us to be able to put that together, and it’ll be a good experience.”

Those looking to help volunteer can reach out to the Rattlers Athletic department.
