Four roads to undergo annual resurfacing program in Medicine Hat

Preliminary work began Monday on select roads as part of Medicine Hat’s annual roadway resurfacing program, as every year resurfacing is done based on the priority identified within a comprehensive plan.

Adjacent infrastructure repairs to the roadways includes catch basins, concrete curbs and gutters, and sidewalks. Road milling and repaving will follow.

Chris Coslovich, the city’s Municipal Works project engineer, said the specific areas to be worked on for resurfacing by the city are chosen with an asset management program.

“We drive a third of the city roads every year. So every three years, we get a full inspection of the entire city road network,” he said.

“That program, it measures a bunch of different things: depending on the surface conditions, the structural condition of it, just the overall driveability- if it’s bumpy, rough, that kind of thing,” he added.

“Then it goes through a matrix and determines a priority listing of roads that we should be focusing on for the year based on our allocated budget.”

This year, construction by the city will occur at four locations.

Maple Avenue Southeast

Repairs began Monday from 2 Street Southeast to the Allowance Avenue bridges, with milling and paving to follow starting mid-June.

West Boundary Road

Only the northbound lanes will be resurfaced, from Highway 1 to Box Spring Boulevard Northwest, with repairs expected by the city to begin early May and last around a week.

Paving will follow in early June.

College Avenue Southeast

Both north and southbound lanes will be resurfaced from College Drive Southeast to Highway 1, with repairs expected to start early June and last around three weeks.

Paving will follow in August.

South Boundary Road Southeast

The roadway will be split into east work zones and west work zones from Southlands Drive Southeast to South Ridge Drive.

MIlling and paving is expected to begin late August or early September, and will take three weeks to complete.

Two-way traffic flow will be maintained throughout each of the four work zones.

Coslovich said however that motorists should plan for delays around the sites.

“Overall, you’re going to get a reduction from two lanes to one, but at least there won’t be any full road closures or anything like that,” he said.

Coslovich said the city does try to minimize the impact of construction as much as it can.

“We do ask that the motorists have patience, and slow down while going by our crews, just for the safety of our crews,” he said.

The full roadway resurfacing program is expected by the city to conclude by Sept. 30.

The city says all schedules are weather dependent and subject to change.
