How to vote in Canada’s federal election today

Apr 28, 2025 | 4:05 AM

It’s election day across Canada and in here in Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner.

Everyone is assigned a polling station — and it will be open for 12 hours today.

The station’s hours may vary depending on the time zone, according to Elections Canada.

There are two basic requirements to vote today: you must be Canadian and be 18 years old.

Identification

Elections Canada has three options to verify a federal election voter.

The first option is to show a piece of government photo identification. That can be a driver’s license.

The second option is to show two pieces of identification. Both must have your name and at least one must have your current address.

Elections Canada has a long list of accepted identification for you prove your identity and address.

The third option is to declare your identity and address in writing and have someone assigned to your polling station vouch for you.

Where do I vote?

There are two ways to know where to vote.

Those who are registered ahead of time should have received a voter information card in the mail by April 11. It will tell you your assigned polling station for election day voting.

Other than that, you can find your advance voting location by using the voter information service online or by calling Elections Canada.

When should I vote?

Elections Canada released a graph that shows the peak times to vote.

Usual peak voting times are the early morning and after 4 p.m. on election day.

From 10 a.m. to noon, traffic is lower.

The best time to go to avoid line ups is from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., according to Elections Canada.
