Meet Tom Rooke, Liberal Party candidate for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner

Apr 17, 2025 | 10:00 AM

Tom Rooke is the Liberal Party candidate for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner.

Rooke lives in Medicine Hat.

Why are you running to be a member of parliament?

In our elections I feel the voters deserve a choice of a local candidate rather than an administrative candidate from another region. I’ve always had an interest in public affairs and decided it’s time for action at such a crucial time in our nation’s history.

This riding needs a voice that will speak for them directly to the government. I hope that voice will be mine.

Why should people vote for you, and what skills do you have that make you suitable for this role?

I am representing the party which will probably form the next government. It is time for southeastern Alberta to have an MP on the government’s side who can voice their concerns directly rather than being represented by the back bench opposition. Alberta, and in particular, our riding has been in the dark too long and Ottawa needs to hear directly from their elected representative.

The voters in this riding deserve better. They have concerns and those concerns deserve to be heard directly to someone in government. Many voters are seeing this and will vote for the party who will achieve this needed change rather than their fathers’ party again. Amongst my education and interest and understanding of parliament, I am a good listener and trained public speaker.

I am dedicated to the task at hand no matter what that task may be and I will serve this riding with pride and purpose.

What will you advocate for; and do you intend to fully toe the party line?

The main issues I hear at the doors and gatherings focuses on the economy, affordability, safety, and sovereignty. It is important that a candidate advocates what most of the voters tell you. If that’s what the party line is, then bravo that the Liberal party recognized the main issues. That’s what on people’s minds.

Many voters are concerned about keeping Canada together. The threat from the U.S. is real which they fear as do I. Our border is being strengthened to give added protection from smuggling and the like. Also, more plans are being developed to strengthen our economy with more diversified trading partners and unions.

The Mark Carney’s experience worldwide will spur on these plans, and we will soon have the fastest growing economy in the G7 countries. If that’s towing the party line, then so be it. It seems that s what the voters want.

How do you believe Canada’s federal government should tackle its current predicament with the United States, and where do you sit on Canadian sovereignty?

I believe the federal government under Mark Carney’s leadership along with the premiers of the provinces and territories have put together a solid plan to address the idiocy coming from the U.S. That predicament has united Canada as it hasn’t been for a long time. We are all Canadians and despite some differences, we will come together when someone or country threatens us.

As shown in previous questions, plans are already underfoot and in action to strengthen the border, to expand our trading partners, to keeping the economy moving rather that sitting back and waiting to see if we survive. Of course, we will survive because we are Canadians who never back down in times of trouble.

This has been proven repeatedly through history, and it shall be proven again. Leadership is what we need and that is what we have under Mark Carney. I stand on Canada Strong. I stand on guard for thee!
