2025 CANDIDATE PROFILE

Meet Jocelyn Johnson, New Democratic Party candidate for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner

Apr 10, 2025 | 3:13 PM

Jocelyn Johnson is the New Democratic Party candidate for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner.

Johnson lives in Edmonton.

As with every candidate, she was presented with four questions to respond to in writing for this profile.

The questions were: “Why are you running to be a Member of Parliament?”, “Why should people vote for you, and what skills do you have that make you suitable for this role?”, “What will you advocate for; and do you intend to fully toe the party line?” and “How do you believe Canada’s federal government should tackle its current predicament with the United States, and where do you sit on Canadian sovereignty?”

Johnson decided to respond in one statement:

Questionnaire answer

Everyone deserves a representative who respects them, listens to them, and works tirelessly on their behalf. Residents in Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner tell me they want to elect someone who will fight like heck for them at the national table while also working to bring the community together. I’m ready to do exactly that.

I put my name forward because I care about this community wholeheartedly. Good governance relies on strong accountability and voters having quality candidates to choose from. I bring a wealth of experience in advocacy and public policy, having worked for over a decade in federal, provincial, and municipal political offices. I can hit the ground running and know exactly where the levers are to get things done for people.

I hear consistently that people are tired of feeling like their vote doesn’t matter; they don’t want to feel taken for granted or their voice drowned out. After so many years of voting the same way, many are telling me they’re looking at ways to bring more federal focus here. Given the national landscape, it’s clear that voting Conservative again would mean more of the same for this riding.

Sending a southern Alberta New Democrat to Ottawa would be exactly the kind of shake-up needed to wake people up in Parliament and get them thinking seriously about the need to focus more on the needs of southern Albertans.

My sole focus as a Member of Parliament would be making sure the people of Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner are kept front and centre in all votes. I would be a strong presence rather than just an additional backbencher lost in the crowd. I would force the government to consider the impacts of federal decisions on Albertans.

To me, being a representative for the public means making sure every person in your riding knows they matter to you. Leadership is about moving past partisan politics to show every constituent that you value their contribution to the community by championing their voice and doing what’s possible to meet their needs, even if you disagree on issues and party affiliation. This has been my experience throughout my work – going above and beyond to serve members of the public, no matter how they voted in elections.

Diverse perspectives are integral to our democracy. Respectful debate is healthy. But tearing others down and fixating on division is part of the problem. If those in government are more focused on knocking down their opponents than passing effective budgets and good policies that serve people’s needs, they are there for the wrong reasons.

Demonizing others doesn’t help to soften political tensions between neighbours; it only increases fractures. Saying our country is broken and that things will be a disaster if the Conservative party isn’t elected isn’t the leadership many people are looking for. This constant negativity doesn’t help people want to settle and raise their family here, doesn’t attract the talent and investment our business community needs, and undermines pride and optimism. The kind of collaborative community spirit I grew up knowing in Medicine Hat is what’s driven me to continue working to further the public good. I want to see that spirit grow.

This election is an incredibly important one for the country and local community. It’s about coming together to quickly and efficiently strengthen and diversify our economy and supply chains, defend our jobs, create new good-paying jobs for the long term, and have each other’s backs as working-class people trying to build the best lives we can. We are a strong community within a united Canada.
