Alberta dedicates $1M in planning to replace Cardston Health Centre

Mar 31, 2025 | 10:26 AM

Alberta is investing $1 million in planning to replace the Cardston Health Centre through its multimillion-dollar rural hospital enhancement program.

Cardston is one of six capital projects receiving cash through a $330-million pot the province will spend over three years as part of an effort to address rural health challenges, pending approval of the 2025 budget.

MLA Justin Wright, parliamentary secretary for rural health in Alberta’s south, called the planning funds “much-needed” as the health system looks to replace one of the province’s oldest facilities.

The Alberta government is also spending $25 million to complete projects approved under the Rural Health Facilities Revitalization Program and $20 million in planning funds for primary care centres in rural, remote and Indigenous communities.

The province said $80 million will be used to develop the La Crete Maternity and Community Health Centre.

A further $18 million will be used to fund furnishings, equipment and information technology infrastructure for the Mountview Health Complex in Beaverlodge, with an additional $170 million in capital lease costs for the facility.

“More Albertans are choosing to live in rural communities, and we’re improving their access to health care services while planning for the future,” said Wright’s northern rural health counterpart Ron Wiebe.

“We’re making major investments in northern Alberta, including in La Crete and Beaverlodge where residents travel too far to access care.”
