COMES TO KANANASKIS IN JUNE

The Government of Alberta has issued a temporary regulation enabling Alberta-based Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) reserves to take reservist leave to support security measures at the G7 Summit planned for June in Kananaskis.

On March 27, Matt Jones, Minister of Jobs, Economy and Trade, and Alberta’s Military Liaison Justin Wright issued statements announcing the regulation. It takes effect March 31 and expires on August 31.

“Alberta’s government recognizes the sacrifices Albertans make while serving in the Canadian Armed Forces, both in active duty and the reserves. Our government is committed to supporting our armed forces reservist members by providing a job-protected leave so they can fulfill their service obligations and keep their civilian jobs, while engaging in expanded duties,” says Jones.

He is confident this change will provide more capacity to the CAF to support the summit’s security and success.

“Alberta’s reservists are uniquely positioned to take on this role, as their deep-rooted commitment to both our province and country, combined with their unparalleled readiness and expertise, make them the ideal force for this special mission,” Jones adds.

Wright thanked Jones for the temporary regulation, stating this may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for some reservists; the last time the summit was held in Alberta was 2002.

He also encouraged civilian employers to accommodate reservists and support their requests for special leave.
