Dramatic weather change expected in winter return for prairies

Mar 26, 2025 | 5:47 AM

A wide swath of the prairies is bracing for a sharp return to winter weather — but Medicine Hat is not included.

Special weather statements are in place from Grande Prairie southeastward to as far south as Oyen, and extending into the southeastern corner of Saskatchewan and as far as Winnipeg.

Heavy wet snow will begin this evening over parts of western Alberta, including for Grande Prairie, Whitecourt and Edson.

The snow will intensify across central Alberta tomorrow, with rain and freezing rain possible.

Snowfall amounts could range between 5 and 20 cm across central Alberta by Friday morning.

Medicine Hat is not included in the special weather statement. However, the city is forecast to go from a high of 20 C on Thursday to just 2 C on Friday.
