Medicine Hat’s deputy fire chief on Tuesday promoted positive mental health strategies during the Headstrong Summit at Medicine Hat College.

Douglas Gill previously spent 20 years as a member of the Canadian Forces, with both the Army and Air Force.

He said the summit is a fantastic opportunity to pass on some words of wisdom to kids to be leaders in their own schools in terms of mental health.

“Getting them to spread the word, get rid of the stigma,” Gill said.

“It’s okay to not be okay. It’s not okay to not be okay for a long time,” he added.

“Passing on that message of hope to people and giving them the tools that they need to help their peers succeed is essential.”

Gill spoke about having a resilience shield through physical fitness, mental fitness and awareness, mindfulness, spirituality, stress management, and a strong support networks.

It’s about finding out the things that you need to protect yourself and to help yourself move forward to get through those troubling times as key to success, he said.

Gill added that when dealing with trauma it’s important to find others who have lived those experiences to help get each other through it.

“The more we get the message out, the more that headstrong and the Canadian Mental Health Association gets the message out about de-stigmatizing mental health,” Gill said.

“Making sure people know that there’s places to go, it’s going to be successful outcomes for everyone.”

He said headstrong to him is having strong mental wellness and having a strong self-care plan to get you through those troubling times.

Gill presented to over 80 local Grade 8 and 9 students.
