Carney calls election as parties kick off campaigns

Mar 23, 2025 | 9:31 AM

The leaders vying to become Canada’s next prime minister officially kicked off their campaigns Sunday.

Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Rideau Hall on Sunday to request that Parliament be dissolved and an election be called, which was approved.

Canadians will cast their ballots on April 28 after a five-week campaign.

Sources tell The Canadian Press that Carney, who has not yet served as an MP, will seek election in the Ottawa riding of Nepean.

Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh began their campaigns in the capital region before hitting the trail.

Recent polls have suggested the Liberals and Conservatives in a tight neck-and-neck race as the campaign begins.
