New Democratic Party’s federal candidate makes 2025 return

Mar 21, 2025 | 3:40 PM

Jocelyn Johnson, who ran in the 2021 federal election under her maiden name Stenger, is returning as the New Democratic Party’s candidate for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner.

Johnson was born in Oyen and grew up in Medicine Hat before leaving for university and a career in Edmonton, where she lives now, according to social media.

In 2021, she racked up the second-most number of ballots that year with 14.1 per cent, the highest of any runner-up in the riding since a Liberal candidate claimed 25.6 per cent in 2016.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to call a federal election on Sunday, sending parties scrambling to finalize all their candidates.

Johnson has a Facebook page dedicated to her campaign but has so far posted little beyond her election website, a message supporting leader Jagmeet Singh and reposting content from the party.

Recent polling from 388Canada has the New Democrats dropping to nine seats from the 24 the party currently holds.

Johnson has not yet responded to an interview request.

She’ll once again be up against MP Glen Motz, who is running for a fourth time for the Conservatives. The Green Party has put forward Andy Shadrach, who is based in British Columbia.
