Former Tigers competing at U Sport Men’s Hockey Championship

Four former Medicine Hat Tigers are competing at the 2025 U SPORTS Men’s Hockey Championship.

The tournament began Thursday and runs until Sunday at TD Place in Ottawa.

Suiting up for the Mount Royal University Cougars, the fifth seed team at the championships is centre Teague Patton who spent three season in the black and orange from the 2019-20 season until the 2021-22 season.

Patton played 78 regular season games as a Tiger over that time and is also an alumni of the South Alberta Hockey Academy having played there in the 2020-21 season.

Patton had two goals and an assist in the Cougars first game of the tournament against the Toronto Metropolitan University Bold on Thursday.

The 5-4 loss for the Cougars was the longest game in U Sport History for men’s hockey going into a fifth overtime before it ended.

The 21-year old Patton, from Kelowna, B.C. is in his first season with the Cougars, he put up 15 points in 12 regular season games to go with four points in six playoff games.

Also with the Cougars is 22-year old defenseman Kurtis Smythe from Cloverdale, B.C. who played 57 games with the Tigers during the 2022-23 season.

Also competing is defenseman Trevor Longo, a three year member of the Tigers from the 2017-18 to the 2019-20 season, suting up in .

The 24-year old Longo from Vancouver, B.C. is a fourth year member of the Queen’s University Gaels, where he put up 2 assists through 18 games this season, and appeared in two playoff games.

The Gaels are seventh seed in the eight team tournament.

A pair of former Tigers are on the second seed University of Saskatchewan Huskies at the tournament.

Defenseman Parker Gavlas, a 25-year old from Saskatoon, SK has eight points through 26 regular season games, and one point through three playoff games with the Huskies this season.

Gavlas played 57 games with the Tigers in the 2019-20 season.

Forward Ashton Ferster, a 21-year old from Prince Albert, SK has 7 points in 11 regular season games with the Huskies this season.

He spent two seasons with the Tigers 2020-21 and 2021-22.
