Medicine Hat Tigers’ McKenna earns third player of the week honour

Mar 17, 2025 | 2:22 PM

Medicine Hat Tigers forward Gavin McKenna has won the Tempo WHL Player of the Week honour for the third time this season.

This time for the week ending Sunday, March 16, which had McKenna put up 11 points over just two games.

This included a new career single game point mark for McKenna, with a seven point performance on Saturday night at Co-op Place against the Red Deer Rebels, where he also netted his second hat-trick of the year.

McKenna’s 38-game point streak dates back to November 6, making it the longest point streak in modern WHL history, 1996 to present.

The point streak is also the second-longest in the Canadian Hockey League in the 21st century, passing Sidney Crosby’s 37-game streak from the 2004-05 season.

McKenna has only gone pointless in three games during the 2024-25 season.

His 121 points in 54 games put him five points behind Spokane Chiefs forward Andrew Cristall, with two regular season games remaining.

The 17-year-old McKenna leads all skaters in assists and plus/minus and sits third among all CHL skaters in points.

The Tigers have won eight straight games to stay on top of the Central Division and Eastern Conference standings in the final week of the WHL’s regular season.

Next up for the Tigers is a contest on Saturday, when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes for their final regular season home game at Co-op Place.

The regular season finale on the road will be Sunday at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary against the Hitmen.

A game that could determine top spot in the WHL’s Eastern Conference.
