Alberta government increases support for foster and kinship caregivers

The Alberta government is increasing financial support for foster and kinship caregivers to ease cost-of-living pressures and provide stability for children and youth in care.

As part of Budget 2025, if passed, the province has allocated $3.1 million to raise caregiver rates by two per cent, helping cover day-to-day expenses like food and clothing. Additional funding aims to support caregivers who look after children with complex needs.

Minister of Children and Family Services, Searle Turton says, “Making life more affordable for Alberta’s dedicated caregivers will allow them to focus on providing the love, care, and support that every child deserves.”

Beyond financial assistance, the government is also expanding counseling access for foster caregivers, continuing the refer-a-foster-caregiver program to recruit new foster families, and introducing support to help young adults transition out of care.

The funding is part of a broader $11 million investment over the next four years aimed at strengthening Alberta’s foster care system.

Sonja Polz, executive director of ALIGN Association of Community Services, welcomed the announcement, stating, “With the rising cost of living, this investment is an important step in ensuring caregivers have the resources they need to provide care, stability, and safety for children and youth in their homes.”

As of Dec. 31, 2024, there were 1,494 foster caregivers, 2,196 kinship caregivers, and 3,013 families offering permanent homes through adoption or guardianship throughout Alberta.
