Snow melt causing issues for Cypress County roads

Feb 28, 2025 | 8:43 AM

The fast snow melt and temperature rise has caused some weather-related issues in Cypress County.

On Tuesday, a section of TWP RD 120, adjacent to Highway 3 was closed until the next morning due to flooding.

The area southwest of Medicine Hat near the roadway is now left with a slough.

Cypress County Reeve Dan Hamilton said in an interview it was an anomaly that happened this year to flood in that area.

He added their crews are freeing up culverts that have ice in them, so this doesn’t take place.

There is still snow pack up in the Cypress Hills, that will continue to melt and help fill reservoirs and creeks in the area.

Hamilton said there’s a lot of snow up there.

“I don’t think there’s too much for concerns,” Hamilton said.

“There’s a couple of roads that are on the south side of Elkwater that are closed right now. They have been washed out,” he added.

“We won’t get to them until we know the snow melt is done and then we’ll get them repaired and back up and going.”

Hamilton added the county crews are monitoring and taking care of what they can as it comes up, to keep the roads open.

Any residents, Hamilton said to give the county office a call at 403-526-2888.
