The Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub recently received a generous offer from Acciona Energy, in regards to needed funded items for the food bank.

The energy company provided the food bank with $102,000 to renovate the portioning kitchen in the building, as well as purchase a new refrigerated van.

AE is one of the world’s leading renewable energy firms, based in Chicago, Ill.

The company is currently developing a wind farm in the county of Forty Mile, and reached out to the food bank asking for items on a wishlist that it required.

Melissa Mullis, executive director of the Root Cellar, said that AE has a great social responsibility in the communities it works in.

“They really like to do kind things in the communities that they work in,” she said.

“They reached out to us and said, ‘Hey, how can we help?'”

Mullis said that the portioning kitchen wasn’t touched during the initial renovations, so this allowed them to make it a clean, updated space.

She said that the food bank goes all across southern and central Alberta to share food, or accept resources from other suppliers.

The new refrigerated van allows transport in a food-safe way.

“It gives us the opportunity to share food within the network,” she said.

“If we have a lot of cucumbers we can go share it with Taber, and they give us some corn. So it’s a really cool trading system,” she added.

“To take our big truck across the province really just doesn’t make a lot of sense economically, so it gives us a way to reduce our footprint, but also be able to share food.”

Mullis said that the new kitchen gives the opportunity to be in a more food-safe environment, along with providing more storage space.

She thanks AE for taking the time to get to know the community, and helping the food bank out in a very unique way.
