Medicine Hat Transit sees record ridership in 2024 with over one million passengers

Feb 11, 2025 | 3:39 PM

Passengers boarded Medicine Hat Transit buses over one million times in 2024 for the first time.

The city’s transit manager Gordon Dykstra said the increase in ridership shows that commuters depend upon a service that takes them where they need to go.

“Where people are using the bus, we’re putting service on. That’s what we did last year,” he said Tuesday, saying the system responds effectively to pressure.

“We added the Route 56. The year before that, we added the Route 46. I think those are important parts of attracting people to transit,” he added.

“We’re focused on high density locations and main corridors. I think people find the transit service useful when we do that.”

There were 1,033, 579 total passengers last year, according to new figures released by the city.

Dykstra said that MHT has had strong council and provincial support for the city’s Fair Entry Program, and that it has been a “significant driver of additional ridership”.

He said that the purpose of FEP is to make sure that people of all income levels have a reasonable amount of access to city services.

The MHT service strives to provide safe, reliable and inclusive options within the budget of all of the city’s residents, he said.

Jessie Lewinske-Jones, a frequent public transit user, says that she has seen transit improve over the years she’s used it.

“I’ve seen some routes get added, like a couple of routes were added. Another bus goes all day for another extra day, which is really helpful,” she said

“One of the big downsides of public transport is that it’s very difficult to get anywhere at the end of the day on weekends,” she added.

“Which is really difficult for some of us that work mornings and nights weekends, where it starts a lot later and ends a lot earlier.”

Lewinske-Jones said that another thing she would improve is to add more bus stop shelters around the city, especially for the colder season.
