12-year old wins contest for Medicine Hat Tigers jersey design

The Medicine Hat Tigers jerseys had a different look to them during Friday’s game against the Swift Current Broncos.

This is thanks to a design drawn by a 12-year old from Medicine Hat who won a Canadian Hockey League jersey design contest.

Matthew Shafer said he’s very excited about it, especially winning the first time he entered the contest.

“”My original design was like an old, retro NHL style, and I’m so happy to see them wear it on the ice,” Mathew said.

Matthew has been a Tigers fan for about five years and goes to every game he has a chance to.

He’s was excited to be able to drop the puck at the game, get one of the jerseys he designed autographed by the team, and a dressing room tour prior to the game.

Matthew’s father Kelly Shafer said they will try to buy one of the game used jerseys, and will be soaking in the experience with friends and family.

An opportunity to submit a jersey design was something that was planned to do last year as well.

“It’s funny, because last year my dad, he’s the one who brought it up, and I wanted Matthew to get in it, and the day that I was like, okay, Matt, you got to make your drawing, it was the day after the deadline,” Kelly said.

“This year he did it, and I believe he took kind of an older Tampa Bay Lightning‘s kind of retro design, and he kind of took some ideas from that, and then just went with it.”

Matthew lists Tigers captain Oasiz Wiesblatt as his favourite player.

Wiesblatt had said the jerseys are one of the cooler jerseys he’s ever worn as a Tiger and was excited to wear it.
