Proposals for how to utilize the sea cans will be accepted from anyone residing in Medicine Hat.

The city stresses that proposals for the sea cans must highlight a balance of community benefit and taxpayer value.

This could include financial compensation to aid in cost recovery.

City staff have put together 10 criteria to gauge the balance of proposal elements, including community benefit.

Aaron Nelson, the city’s manager of cultural experiences and events, said the initiative includes a realistic budget and must also align with council’s strategic priorities.

He said it involves community wellness and economic development.

Nelson said that the city has invested significantly in the sea cans, and would like to recoup some of the investment.

He said, however, that the higher the community benefit, the lower the compensation that is expected from a sea can proposal.

“From the city perspective, the ideal repurposing of the sea cans is community benefit,” he said.

“We heard that very clearly in our engagement, with all of these great ideas from the community. So, this is a real opportunity for the community to take these ideas and make them into reality,” he added.

“To benefit the maximum amount of residents in the city of Medicine Hat would be the ideal repurposing of the sea cans.”

Nelson says that residents, businesses and community groups in the city are encouraged to submit their proposals.

The project must be located within city limits.

Applications will be accepted online until Feb. 21. Successful applicants will be advised by March 7.
