Every water meter in Medicine Hat to be replaced through city program

Jan 3, 2025 | 7:29 PM

The City of Medicine Hat’s environmental utilities department will begin its water meter replacement program on Monday.

The current working area will be updated as work advances.

Water meters are located indoors and staff will require access inside residential and commercial properties.

Contact will be made with residents and business owners by the city to schedule appointments.

Every meter in the city will require a renewal. The city is divided into alphabetical zones that will be worked on from A to Z.

Zone A is located in NW Crescent Heights, where work will first begin.

The previous meters are coming to the end of their lifespan. It has been nearly 10 years since the last replacement.

James King, field operations manager for Environmental Utilities, said that the city wants to be convenient to residents.

He said that doing so, however, may mean a longer timeline for the program. This one could take several years to complete.

“Obviously we want to be accurate or convenient to the residents and commercial people,” he said.

“We have to be available for their scheduling. So timelines, a lot of it depends on how many scheduled we can get during the day,” he added.

“One zone may take us longer than the other, depending on how we can schedule in those appointments.”

King said that staff will be in communications with property owners so they are aware when the replacement can happen.

Individual replacements shouldn’t take longer than an hour, and residents are welcome to remain in their homes.
