Medicine Hat-area MP Glen Motz calls NDP leader ‘hypocritical opportunist’

Dec 20, 2024 | 1:46 PM

Medicine Hat’s MP Glen Motz called Jagmeet Singh a “hypocritical opportunist” for saying his New Democratic Party will vote to bring down the federal Liberal government only after the holiday break started.

“He’s a hypocritical opportunist and why should Canadians believe him again?” Motz, the Conservative representative of Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner, told CHAT News on Friday.

“From September until now, he’s voted eight times to keep this government in power and the results have been devastating for our economy.”

Singh left a power-sharing agreement his party had with the Liberals earlier this year but has since supported the minority government in crucial confidence votes.

That approach changed this week when Singh called for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down from his post as Liberal leader amid turmoil in the Liberals after a pair of high-profile Cabinet resignations.

Moments after Motz’s comments, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre requested the Governor General to recall the House of Commons for a confidence vote that could trigger an election.

A federal election legally must take place by next October but if the Liberals are unable to maintain the confidence of the House, a vote will be called.

The Conservatives are poised to win a landslide majority government with twice the support the Liberals have, polling shows.

Motz confirmed he will run again in the next federal election that could happen early in the new year amid the political instability.

As for whether he would accept a Cabinet post in a Conservative government, Motz said it would be taken under consideration.

“We have to win an election first, and we’ll wait and see,” Motz told anchor Dan Reynish during CHAT News at Noon.

Motz added that Poilievre is also prepared to lead the country.

“He is certainly someone who has genuine concern for the people of this country, and for this country, period,” Motz said.
