South Alberta Light Horse museum curator awarded coronation medal

The curator of the South Alberta Light Horse Regimental Museum has been awarded with a King Charles III Coronation Medal.

Wes Krause is one of only 30,000 Canadians to earn this award.

The King Charles III Coronation medal is administered and awarded by the Governor General of Canada who acts as the official representative of the reigning Monarch, King Charles.

He received his nomination from the South Alberta Light Horse Regimental Association.

Krause said the medal is normally kept in the box it came with at his home, and every time he walks by it, he is still coming to terms with the honour of being given the award.

“It was an honor just to be nominated, just that alone,” Krause said.

“But when I got the call from the president and he says, well, guess what? You’re one of four people that we nominated to receive this. It’s like, okay. It took me a little while to come down to earth,” he added.

“But then I came down to earth and I said, wow, I’m still flabbergasted, but deeply grateful, deeply appreciative. And man, this is a huge honor for me.”

Krause said it’s a good feeling to know the work that he’s doing is being noticed and appreciated.

“The support of the South Alberta Light Horse, the support of the association, the support of the foundation has been mind blowing,” Krause said.

“It feels good that I go and I do something that I absolutely love to do, preserve history,” he added.

“You might say I’m living a dream and this is a culmination of that dream.”

He is also an archives officer with the Royal Canadian Legion, and the Medicine Hat chapter president for the Canadian Aviation Historic Society.

Krause said that he doesn’t necessarily need recognition.

“I just need to see more stuff, show me more stuff, more artifacts, more history,” Krause said.

“I’m also preserving history, preserving the memory of veterans and those who served our country. That is something as well that I really love working with, as well as veterans’ families,” he added.

“I’ve been working with veterans’ families to help them find out history about their uncle, their father, their grandfather. And it’s a great feeling.”

Krause received the medal during the Dec. 14 parade for the South Alberta Light Horse Regiment, part of the Soldier’s Appreciation night.

“Mr. Paul Mast, a major, retired, served with the regiment in an administrative role and adjutant role, also received the medal,” Krause said.

“I’ll tell you, I was in great company.”
