Medicine Hat city council passes budget with 5.6 per cent tax increases in 2025, 2026

Medicine Hat’s property taxes will increase 5.6 per cent in both 2025 and 2026 after city council on Monday passed a two-year budget that maintains services amid high inflation and expected drops in the power reserves.

Mayor Linnsie Clark said she was reluctant to support the budget as she did not receive all the information she wanted.

Clark joined councillors Andy McGrogan and Shila Sharps in voting against the budget. It passed 6-3.

The city’s elected officials passed an amended version of the budget that did not include a $9.5-million food waste compost facility.

Council in a 7-2 vote decided to not include a $500,000 request for funding from HALO Air Ambulance — a proposed $250,000 for each year — for consideration in the budget until a formal application process is created.

A motion earlier in Monday’s public council meeting proposing staff find a way to cut 1.7 per cent from those tax increases failed.
